Early Development in Hondarribia
Born in 1966, Olazábal grew up adjacent to the Real Golf Club de San Sebastian. His parents, Gaspar and his mother, both held positions at the club, where his father served as a greenskeeper. Olazábal began using a shortened golf club at age two, eventually gaining regular practice access by age six. His amateur career included winning the 1983 Boys Amateur Championship and the 1984 The Amateur Championship, where he defeated Colin Montgomerie.

Olazábal turned professional in 1986, finishing his debut season second on the European Tour Order of Merit. Over his career, he accumulated 23 European Tour titles and six PGA Tour victories. His performance at the 1990 NEC World Series of Golf featured a course-record 61, culminating in an 18-under 262 total that distanced him from the field by 12 strokes. He spent over 300 weeks in the world top 10 between 1989 and 1995.
Ryder Cup Participation and Captaincy
Between 1987 and 2006, Olazábal competed in seven Ryder Cups for Europe, frequently partnering with Seve Ballesteros. In 2012, he served as the European team captain at Medinah Country Club. Facing a 10–6 deficit going into the final day, he guided the squad to a 14½–13½ victory. This outcome was later attributed by Olazábal to the inspiration provided by his late friend, Seve Ballesteros.
