Jörg Haider died in a car accident in Lambichl on 11 October 2008, shortly after leading the BZÖ in the Austrian parliamentary elections. Early Career and Education
Born in 1950 in Bad Goisern am Hallstättersee, Haider attended the University of Vienna from 1969 to 1973, where he earned a Doctor of Laws. Following his graduation, he served as an employee at the University of Vienna law faculty between 1973 and 1976. His early political engagement began in the late 1970s, leading to his first appointment as a member of the National Council of Austria in 1979.

Haider rose to the chairmanship of the Freedom Party of Austria in 1986, a position he maintained until 2000. He leveraged his role to pivot the party away from its previous coalitions, focusing on aggressive political rhetoric. During this period, he served as a member of the National Council of Austria from 1986 to 1989 and again from 1994 to 1999.
Governance in Carinthia
His influence was most significant within Carinthia. He served as the governor of the state from 1989 to 1991 and returned to the office for a longer tenure between 1999 and 2008. Beyond his political duties, he managed business interests, including the Bärental estate, which he inherited in 1983.
Later Years and Political Shift
In 2005, Haider broke from the Freedom Party to serve as the BZÖ Chairman, leading the new party until his death in 2008. Throughout his public life, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria for his work within the Austrian political framework.
