Early Career and Education
Born in 1959 in Barcelona, Spain, Bertomeu pursued academic training at the University of Barcelona, where he earned a bachelor's degree in law. He also attended the Complutense University of Madrid. His initial entry into sports administration took place within the Basketball Clubs Association, known as the ACB. Between 1982 and 1994, he functioned as the general counsel and secretary for this body. He subsequently served as the vice president of the ACB from 1994 until 2000.

Upon transitioning to Euroleague Basketball in 2000, Bertomeu took on the role of chief executive officer. His portfolio expanded significantly during his time at the organization. He was named chairman of the board in 2009 and assumed the presidency of the body in 2011. Under his leadership, the organization solidified its role in governing the primary European club tournaments. He conducted these professional responsibilities while maintaining his citizenship in Spain and utilizing his linguistic skills, including Catalan.
Departure and Tenure Assessment
In November 2021, the organizational structure underwent a shift when six teams within the league voted for his removal. This decision signaled the end of his tenure as CEO, which was finalized at the conclusion of the 2021-22 competitive season. Prior to this departure, his efforts in sports development gained international recognition. In 2008, the government of Lithuania conferred the Order of the Republic of Lithuania upon him, acknowledging his contributions to the promotion and expansion of athletics within that nation.
