Early Career and Italian Football
Mensah began his football development at MBC Accra before moving to Italy as a teenager to join Bologna, where he made two appearances in the Coppa Italia. Following a two-year period at Swiss side Bellinzona, he signed with Genoa for the 2001–02 season. During that campaign, he recorded 26 appearances and scored three goals. In 2002, he transferred to Chievo, where he struggled to secure a permanent starting position. This period included loan spells at Modena and Cremonese, the latter occurring during the 2005–06 season.

In January 2006, Mensah joined the French club Rennes on loan. He quickly established himself in the starting lineup, contributing to a significant defensive improvement for the team. Between March 11 and March 31, 2006, he helped the side maintain four consecutive clean sheets. Following these performances, the club signed him to a three-year contract. During the 2006–07 season, data indicated that Rennes conceded significantly fewer goals when he was on the field, leading to him being rated as a high-performing player in the league.
International and Premier League Tenure
Representing the Ghana national team, Mensah served as a center-half and occasionally as a right-back, also captaining the Black Stars. His international resume includes appearances at the 2004 Summer Olympics and the 2002 African Cup of Nations. Between 2009 and 2011, he played in the English Premier League while on loan at Sunderland, where he made 34 appearances and scored one goal. Throughout his career, he was also associated with Olympique Lyonnais, where he made 13 appearances.
