Football Beginnings
Layfield attended Sweetwater High School before advancing to Trinity Valley Community College and Abilene Christian University. During his time at Abilene, he served two years as a starter on the offensive line and earned first-team All-Lone Star Conference honors. After an unsuccessful attempt to join the Los Angeles Raiders as an undrafted free agent, he found success in the World League of American Football. During the 1991 season, he started all ten games at right tackle for the San Antonio Riders, wearing jersey number 61.

Trained by Black Bart and Brad Rheingans, Layfield debuted in September 1992 for the Global Wrestling Federation in Texas as John Hawk. He secured the GWF Tag Team Championship twice before embarking on international tours. His travels included stints in Japan with the Network of Wrestling and Genichiro Tenryu's WAR, as well as time in Mexico and Germany, where he competed for the Catch Wrestling Association. In 1995, he held the NWA North American Heavyweight Championship briefly before entering the World Wrestling Federation.
Rise in the WWF
Layfield entered the WWF in late 1995 and eventually gained recognition during the Attitude Era as Bradshaw. He formed a prominent tag team partnership with Ron Simmons known as the Acolytes Protection Agency. The duo were portrayed as tough, beer-drinking mercenaries. Following the dissolution of the APA in 2004, he rebranded as the heel persona JBL. This character, a wealthy and arrogant businessman, led to a 280-day WWE Championship reign. By 2009, he achieved Triple Crown and Grand Slam Champion status before his retirement at WrestleMania 25.
Media and Corporate Roles
Following his in-ring retirement, Layfield maintained a professional presence in wrestling as an ambassador, color commentator, and show contributor. He serves as an English language commentator for the Mexican promotion Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. Beyond his sports career, he operates as a finance commentator for Fox News and Fox Business.
