On 21 June 1954, in Turku, Finland, John Landy became the second man in history to complete a mile run in under four minutes. Recording a time of 3:57.9, he eclipsed the existing standard and maintained that world record for more than three years, cementing his status as a pivotal figure in middle-distance athletics.
Athletic Development
Born in Melbourne in 1930, Landy attended Geelong Grammar School and Malvern Memorial Grammar School before enrolling at the University of Melbourne. His interest in competitive running intensified during his university years, leading him to join the Geelong Guild Athletic Club in 1949. Under the guidance of coach Percy Cerutty, he focused on endurance and training intensity, securing a position on the Australian Olympic team for the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki.

In August 1954, at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, Landy competed against Roger Bannister in a race widely characterized as the Dream Race. Landy famously finished second in a contest where both men broke the four-minute barrier. He later displayed notable sportsmanship during the 1956 Australian National Championships. When fellow runner Ron Clarke tripped during the third lap, Landy stopped to assist him before resuming the race and ultimately securing victory.
Public Service and Governorship
Beyond his athletic career, Landy held various professional roles, including work as a senior manager at ICI Australia. In 2001, he was appointed the 26th Governor of Victoria, a position he held until 2006. His tenure included serving as the final torchbearer during the 2006 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
