John Goodman started his professional path in New York City after graduating from Missouri State University in 1975. Foundations in Missouri
Born in 1952 in Affton, Missouri, Goodman attended Affton High School. He later enrolled at Missouri State University, where he studied drama alongside Kathleen Turner and Tess Harper. Although a football scholarship brought him to the institution, a torn ACL shifted his focus entirely to the university's theater program. He graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Goodman made his Broadway debut in the 1985 production Big River, earning a Drama Desk Award nomination. His early film credits include Revenge of the Nerds in 1984 and True Stories in 1986. His career trajectory widened significantly with his tenure on the ABC sitcom Roseanne, where he played the character Dan Conner from 1988 to 1997, a role he later revisited in the spin-off The Conners.

Goodman maintained a long-standing creative relationship with the Coen brothers, appearing in Raising Arizona, Barton Fink, The Big Lebowski, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and Inside Llewyn Davis.
