John Giannandrea

John Giannandrea, a British programmer born in 1965 at Bridge of Allan, has occupied senior engineering and executive roles at several major technology firms over the course of three decades. Educated at the University of Strathclyde, he spent his career moving through influential positions at companies ranging from Netscape to Apple, focusing on artificial intelligence and search strategy.

Early Career and Netscape

Giannandrea began his professional trajectory in the mid-1990s. His early career included a stint as a senior engineer at General Magic. Following this, he served as the chief technologist for the web browser group at Netscape, where he worked from 1994 until 1999.

Founding Roles and Expansion

In 1999, Giannandrea transitioned to Tellme Networks, where he served as a co-founder and chief technology officer. His work there focused on speech recognition technology until 2005. He subsequently co-founded Metaweb, remaining with the organization until 2010.

The Google Tenure

Giannandrea joined Google in 2010. During his eight-year tenure, he rose to become the company's chief of search and artificial intelligence, overseeing significant developments in the firm's core product offerings until his departure in 2018.

Apple and Later Operations

Upon leaving Google in 2018, Giannandrea joined Apple Inc. as senior vice president of machine learning and artificial intelligence strategy, reporting to CEO Tim Cook. In March 2025, reports indicated he was removed from his position as head of Siri development. In December 2025, Apple announced his retirement, which took effect in early 2026.
