Early Career and Education
Born on June 29, 1951, in St. Louis, Missouri, Louis John Doerr is the son of a German immigrant. He attended Chaminade College Preparatory School before earning a B.S. and an M.E.E. in electrical engineering from Rice University. He subsequently completed an MBA at Harvard Business School in 1976. In 1974, he began his professional life at Intel Corporation during the development of the 8080 8-bit microprocessor, where he secured several patents for memory devices.

In 1980, Doerr joined the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins. His portfolio of investments includes companies such as Amazon.com, Google, Sun Microsystems, Netscape, and Symantec. He facilitated the $100 million iFund in 2008 alongside Steve Jobs and later led a $150 million investment in Twitter in 2012. He is credited with introducing the Objectives and Key Results framework to Google. In 2016, he stepped down from his leadership position at Kleiner Perkins.
Public Policy and Philanthropy
Doerr has engaged in numerous policy initiatives, serving on the President's Economic Recovery Advisory Board in 2009. He co-founded the lobbying group FWD.us and serves on the boards of the Obama Foundation, the ONE campaign, and the Khan Academy. Alongside his wife, Ann Howland Doerr, he signed the Giving Pledge. His honors include induction into the California Hall of Fame in 2010 and election to the National Academy of Engineering in 2026.
