Athletic Beginnings and Training
Before his emergence in professional wrestling, Cena participated in competitive sports. He graduated from Springfield College in 1999 with a degree in exercise physiology and kinesiology. During his time at the institution, he served as a team captain and an NCAA Division III All-American center for the football team. Seeking a career in wrestling, he moved to California in 1998 to train at the Ultimate University, a facility run by Rick Bassman. Known then as the Prototype, he secured the UPW Heavyweight Championship in 2000.

Cena signed with the World Wrestling Federation in 2001 and underwent development at Ohio Valley Wrestling. His official television debut occurred on June 27, 2002, on SmackDown!, where he challenged Kurt Angle. Following his debut, he gained notoriety as the Doctor of Thuganomics, a character defined by freestyle rapping. His wrestling career included fourteen WWE Championship reigns and three World Heavyweight Championship victories. By the time he retired from the ring in 2025, he held the record for the longest continuous heroic character portrayal in company history.
Career in Media and Film
Beyond the squared circle, Cena ventured into music and cinema. His 2005 rap album, You Can't See Me, reached the 15th position on the Billboard 200 charts. His transition to acting began in 2006 with the film The Marine. He later appeared in diverse projects, including Trainwreck, Blockers, The Suicide Squad, Bumblebee, and F9.
