John Arne Riise

Norwegian association football player

John Arne Riise holds the record as the most capped player for the Norway national football team, having earned 110 caps during his international career. Born in Molde Municipality in 1980, he evolved from a domestic talent into a prominent professional who spent seven seasons at Liverpool before playing in Italy, England, and Cyprus.

Early Career and Move to Monaco

Riise began his professional journey with Aalesund in his native Norway. In 1998, he moved abroad to join the French club Monaco. During his tenure there, he became a regular member of the 1999–2000 Ligue 1 championship-winning squad. Although he attracted attention from English Premier League clubs like Fulham and Leeds United, his move to England was delayed until 2001.

Success at Liverpool

In the summer of 2001, Riise signed with Liverpool for £4 million. His debut in the 2001 UEFA Super Cup against Bayern Munich resulted in a goal during a 3–2 victory. Throughout his seven years at Anfield, he made 348 appearances and won the 2004–05 UEFA Champions League and the 2005–06 FA Cup. During the 2005 Football League Cup Final, he recorded the fastest goal in the history of the fixture.

International and Late Career

Riise retired from international duty for Norway in 2013 after scoring 16 goals. Following his departure from Liverpool in 2008, he played for Roma, Fulham, and APOEL. At Roma, he gained recognition for his performances against Internazionale, Milan, and Juventus. In his post-playing life, he transitioned into roles as an association football coach, online coach, and reality television participant.
