Academic Formation
After completing his early schooling at Preston Lodge High School, Aitchison entered the University of Edinburgh, graduating with an MA in mathematics in 1947. He gained professional experience performing actuarial work for Standard Life from 1947 until 1949. His advanced education continued at the University of Cambridge, where he attended Trinity College between 1949 and 1951, obtaining a BA focused on statistics.

Aitchison began his academic tenure at the Department of Applied Economics at Cambridge in 1952. In 1956, he moved to the University of Glasgow, serving there until 1964. He subsequently held positions at the University of Liverpool from 1964 to 1966 before returning to Glasgow as a Titular Professor. In 1976, he accepted a chair professorship at the University of Hong Kong, remaining there until 1989. His career concluded with a tenure as Professor and Chairman of the Division of Statistics at the University of Virginia from 1989 to 1994, followed by an Honorary Senior Research Fellow role back at the University of Glasgow.
Scientific Contributions and Recognition
Beyond his seminal 1986 monograph, Aitchison authored multiple influential texts, including The Lognormal Distribution, With Special Reference to its Uses in Economics (1957) and Choice Against Chance: An Introduction to Statistical Decision Theory (1970). His service to the field included founding the Hong Kong Statistical Society, serving as its president from 1977 to 1979. His professional stature was reflected in various honors, including the Guy Medal in Silver in 1988, election as a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics in 1993, and receipt of the William Christian Krumbein Medal in 1995.
