The business career of Johannes Malvin Georgsson Eide began prematurely at age 13 when he left home to support his family following the death of his father. Born in Høylandsbygda in 1937, he spent his entire life in his hometown while building a significant industrial presence in the Norwegian maritime sector.
Early Industrial Beginnings
Eide was the second of six children born to Georg Eide Sr. His father operated a shipping plant in Høylandsbygda, where Eide worked as a helper during his childhood. After his father died in 1951, he departed home to earn an income. Upon his return four years later, he collaborated with his brother Gerhard to establish Georg Eide's Sønner. The enterprise focused on the construction of wooden vessels at the site of the former family plant. Eide managed the firm until 1982 before moving into a leadership role at Eide Contracting, a subsidiary that navigated various economic difficulties before the primary company declared bankruptcy.

The operational structure underwent a major reorganization in 1992, resulting in the formation of Eide Marine Services. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Eide managed multiple companies that functioned as subsidiaries under this corporate umbrella. He held the position of CEO until 2001, when his eldest son, Georg Jr., assumed the role. Eide maintained a persistent professional presence at the company headquarters well into his 80s.
Cultural Preservation and Commemoration
In 2005, Eide initiated the construction of a full-scale replica of the Halsnøy Boat, a vessel discovered in 1896 and dated to approximately 300 A.D. This project concluded in 2008. His contributions to the preservation of Norwegian maritime history led to his receipt of the Order of St. Olav in 2006. In 2023, he opened a museum in Høylandsbygda to house his collection of sixty years, which includes historical vessels, wartime relics, and industrial machinery.
Personal Life and Passing
Eide married Aud in 1964. He resided in his hometown of Høylandsbygda for his entire life. Following a period of illness, he died while hospitalized on 24 June 2025 at the age of 87.
