Professional Beginnings
Nebelong studied under Gustav Friedrich Hetsch in Copenhagen. During his tenure in Norway from 1840 to 1853, Nebelong completed several major structures. These include the Tollpakkhuset customs house, the Kommandantboligen at Akershus festning, and the De naturhistoriske samlinger at the Bergen Museum. His preservation work was equally rigorous, encompassing the excavations of the Hovedøya monastery and the 1851 reconstruction of the Heddal Stave Church located in Telemark.
Design Philosophy and Collaborative Work
Nebelong frequently collaborated with figures such as Heinrich Ernst Schirmer, Peter Frederik Wergmann, and Johannes Flintoe. While Hans Linstow remained a primary influence, Nebelong transitioned toward the Swiss style, a trend he debuted in Oslo with the 1844 construction of Heiberggården for Professor Christen Heiberg. This building featured a prominent roof structure over a porch and two wings with tiled gable roofs. His 1847 project, Santa's Boys School in Rosenkrantz, utilized a distinct brick facade characterized by round-arched windows.
