A landscape architect who relocated from the Electorate of Saxony to Sweden at age 22, he became a central figure in the development of Swedish public and royal green spaces during the late eighteenth century.
Early Career and Horticultural Origins
After settling in Sweden, Ackermann secured his first employment working within the gardens of Ekolsund Castle. Following a professional disagreement with his employer, he transitioned to operating an independent market garden. This pivot toward private enterprise preceded his entry into official royal service, which eventually established his reputation in the field of landscape architecture.

In 1774, Ackermann attained the position of director for the royal gardens at Karlberg Palace. His responsibilities expanded significantly in 1785 when he succeeded Fredrik Magnus Piper to lead the ongoing development of Haga Park. Between 1787 and 1790, his design focus shifted toward the creation of complex islet and channel landscapes, reflecting an aesthetic influenced by English garden traditions.
Private Projects and Technical Legacy
Beyond his royal obligations, Ackermann served private clients such as Samuel af Ugglas, for whom he designed the English-style park at Forsmark. His career bridged the transition between diverse garden styles, emphasizing structural design and large-scale botanical implementation. He remained active in the Swedish landscape architectural scene until his death in 1810 at the age of 72.
