Joaquín Ramírez Fernández participated in 479 Formula One Grands Prix during a career spanning four decades. Born in Mexico City in 1941, he transitioned from a university engineering student to a pivotal figure in international motor racing. His professional path included roles as an apprentice mechanic, team coordinator, and author, ultimately helping secure ten Drivers' World Championships.
Early Career and European Transition
Ramírez began his mechanical engineering studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico but departed in 1960 to pursue automotive opportunities in Europe alongside Ricardo Rodríguez. He secured an apprenticeship with Scuderia Ferrari, remaining for two years. Following the death of Rodríguez at the 1962 Mexican Grand Prix, Ramírez held mechanical positions at Maserati and Lamborghini. In 1964, he began working for Ford on the GT40 project, eventually joining Dan Gurney's All American Racers team in 1966.

In December 1983, Ramírez became the team coordinator for the McLaren Formula One operation. During his tenure, which lasted until 2001, he worked closely with drivers such as Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, David Coulthard, and Mika Häkkinen. He was present for seven McLaren Constructors' World Championships between 1984 and 1998. At the conclusion of the 2001 United States Grand Prix, his final event, he received a Harley-Davidson Road King as a gift from Coulthard and Häkkinen.
Post-Retirement Activities
After leaving Formula One, Ramírez published his autobiography, Jo Ramirez: Memoirs of a racing man, in 2005. He contributes a column to the Mexican newspaper Reforma and has provided forewords for multiple publications concerning motorsport history. He remains active in the sport, participating in events like the Carrera Panamericana, where he secured a third-place finish in the A+ Historic 2,000 cc category in 2012 driving a Volvo P-1800.
