Jin Jong-oh

South Korean sports shooter

Five individual gold medals and six total individual medals define the career of Jin Jong-oh, a South Korean sport shooter born in Chuncheon in 1979. A graduate of Kyungnam University, he established himself as the most successful individual shooter in Olympic history through repeated dominance in both the 10-metre air pistol and 50-metre pistol disciplines.

Olympic Milestone Achievements

Jin earned his first Olympic recognition at the 2004 Summer Olympics, securing a silver medal in the 50-metre pistol. He followed this with a gold in the same event at the 2008 Summer Olympics, where he also claimed silver in the 10-metre air pistol. By the 2012 Summer Olympics, he became the first man to defend a 50-metre pistol title, simultaneously winning the 10-metre air pistol gold. In 2016, his victory in the 50-metre pistol event marked three consecutive golds in a single shooting event, a feat unmatched in the sport.

World Championship Records

His performance at the 2014 World Shooting Championships included a score of 583 in qualification, shattering the previous world record for 50-metre pistol held since 1980 by Aleksandr Melentyev. This victory made him the first shooter since 1952 to hold both Olympic and World titles in the discipline concurrently. In 2018, he added another 10-metre air pistol gold to his collection, becoming the first man to win consecutive world titles in that event.

Transition to Public Service

Beyond his athletic career, Jin has engaged in administrative and political spheres. He served as an ambassador for the 2022 Incheon Korea Art Festival. In 2024, his professional trajectory shifted into national governance when he assumed a position as a Member of the National Assembly of South Korea.
