Jin Akiyama

Japanese mathematician

Mathematical demonstrations performed on NHK television programs brought Jin Akiyama to the attention of a wide Japanese audience, where he linked complex concepts to performance art. Born in 1946 in Musashino, his career has spanned academic research, editorial leadership in professional journals, and the public communication of geometric and graph-theoretic principles through various media formats.

Academic Foundations and Transitions

Akiyama completed his undergraduate studies at the Tokyo University of Science, where he was mentored by Takashi Hamada. He continued his graduate education at Sophia University, focusing on differential equations under the supervision of Mitio Nagumo. Despite this initial specialization, he redirected his academic interests toward graph theory. Following a canceled opportunity to work in Ghana, he began his teaching career at Nippon Medical School. Subsequently, he spent two years working alongside Frank Harary at the University of Michigan.

Professional Appointments and Research

Throughout his career, Akiyama held faculty positions at several institutions, including Nippon Medical School, Tokai University, and the Tokyo University of Science. At the latter, he serves as the director of the Mathematical Education Research Center, while holding the status of professor emeritus at Tokai University. His research trajectory evolved significantly during the 1990s, shifting from his long-standing focus on graph theory toward the study of discrete geometry.

Editorial Contributions and Literature

Akiyama has played a key role in the professional structure of his field, acting as the founding managing editor for the journal Graphs and Combinatorics. He also helped establish the Japan Conference on Discrete and Computational Geometry, Graphs, and Games, abbreviated as JCDCG3. His published output includes several collaborative academic and educational texts. These include Factors and Factorizations of Graphs, written with Mikio Kano, and A Day's Adventure in Math Wonderland, co-authored with Mari-Jo Ruiz. He further explored geometric topics in Treks Into Intuitive Geometry: The World of Polygons and Polyhedra, written with Kiyoko Matsunaga.

Public Engagement and Media

Beyond his formal university roles, Akiyama has used unconventional methods to engage the public with mathematical ideas. On prime-time television, he presented magic tricks to explain theoretical concepts. His lectures occasionally incorporate musical performances, where he plays the xylophone or accordion. His public profile also extended into the gaming industry, as he served as the namesake for the Nintendo DS title Master Jin Jin's IQ Challenge.
