James Jonah Cummings began his career in the 1980s and has since contributed his voice to more than 600 distinct titles. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1952, he transitioned from designing Mardi Gras floats in New Orleans to becoming a central figure in American voice acting, frequently collaborating with both the Walt Disney Company and Warner Bros.
Early Career and Transitions
After graduating from Ursuline High School in 1970, Cummings spent years outside the entertainment industry. He worked as a river boat deck hand and performed as a drummer and singer in a rock band named Fusion. After moving to Anaheim, California, he managed a video store before securing his first professional roles in the mid-1980s, including parts in Dumbo's Circus.

Cummings established his reputation by stepping into roles previously held by established performers. In 1988, he became the official voice of Winnie the Pooh, succeeding Sterling Holloway. He later took over the role of Tigger from Paul Winchell and voiced King Triton in The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning when Kenneth Mars could not participate. He also served as a singing double for Jeremy Irons during the production of The Lion King.

Throughout his career, Cummings frequently portrayed villains. His repertoire includes Fat Cat in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, Don Karnage in TaleSpin, and Dr. Ivo Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. In live-action films, he provided the voice for Steele in Balto and Ocula in Small Soldiers.
