Academic Foundations and Appointments
Fan received his Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1989. His career began at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he served from 1989 to 2003. He held a professorship at the University of California, Los Angeles between 1997 and 2000. Subsequently, he chaired the statistics department at the Chinese University of Hong Kong from 2000 to 2003 before transitioning to Princeton University.

Extensive service in academic publishing defines much of his professional activity. He served as the president of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics from 2006 to 2009 and led the International Chinese Statistical Association from 2008 to 2010. His editorial board contributions include work for the Journal of the American Statistical Association, Econometrica, and Management Science. He served as co-editor of The Annals of Statistics, the Journal of Econometrics, and the Journal of Business & Economic Statistics.

Fan has authored or coauthored over 300 articles and several books, including Local Polynomial Modeling and Statistical Foundations of Data Science.
