Formative Years and Early Bands
Born in 1944 in Wallington, Beck developed an interest in the electric guitar after hearing Les Paul on the radio. During his teenage years at Wimbledon College of Arts, he gained experience in various R&B groups, including The Nightshift, The Rumbles, and The Tridents. In 1965, he replaced Eric Clapton in The Yardbirds, contributing to the band's top-charting material and recording the influential instrumental 'Beck's Bolero' before his departure in 1966.

Following his time with The Yardbirds, Beck founded The Jeff Beck Group, which featured Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. This iteration produced the albums Truth and Beck-Ola. After a hiatus caused by a skull fracture from a car accident in 1969, he later formed the power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice. By 1975, he pivoted toward an instrumental focus, producing significant work that traversed jazz rock and guitar-driven electronica.
Recognition and Legacy
Over the course of his career, Beck received eight Grammy Awards, including multiple wins for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, first as a member of The Yardbirds in 1992 and later as a solo artist in 2009. He died in 2023 in Wadhurst and was buried at St Mary the Virgin Churchyard.
