Foundations and Early Ventures
Atwood graduated from the University of Virginia in 1992, holding a bachelor's degree in environmental science alongside a minor in computer science. In February 2013, Atwood founded Civilized Discourse Construction Kit, Inc. to address perceived stagnation in online bulletin board technology. The company launched Discourse, an open-source platform utilizing modern server and client software for threaded discussions. Atwood maintained his position as CEO until February 1, 2023, when he transitioned to the role of Executive Chairman. His hardware interests manifested in 2013 through a collaboration with WASD Keyboards to release the CODE mechanical keyboard.
Philanthropy and Civic Initiatives
Atwood expanded his involvement in non-profit work in 2025 by announcing one-million-dollar contributions to eight organizations. This list included The Trevor Project, Children's Hunger Fund, First Generation Investors, Global Refuge, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, PEN America, Planned Parenthood, and Team Rubicon. Beyond these commitments, he directed $1.5 million toward the nonprofit news site 404 Media and $100,000 to the plastic pollution initiative Precious Plastic.
