Over 50 mathematical outreach events have been organized in Panama under the guidance of Jeanette Shakalli. Since 1985, her focus has evolved from rigorous academic study to the public promotion of mathematics as a discipline, currently serving as the Executive Director of the Panamanian Foundation for the Promotion of Mathematics, also known as FUNDAPROMAT.
Academic Background
Shakalli completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Notre Dame, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in both Mathematics and Chemistry. In 2007, the institution awarded her the Senior GE Prize for Mathematics Majors, an honor reserved for a student who demonstrated academic excellence during their final year. She later moved to Texas A&M University to pursue advanced research, completing her Ph.D. in Mathematics in 2012 under the supervision of advisor Sarah J. Witherspoon.

Between 2012 and 2019, Shakalli held a position at the National Secretariat of Science, Technology, and Innovation of Panama, known as SENACYT. During her tenure in 2016, she launched a program dedicated to math outreach that focuses on recreational mathematics. Beyond this specific initiative, she holds multiple administrative roles, including secretary for the IEEE Panama Section and admissions director for the Panamanian Association for the Advancement of Science.
Global Representation and Recognition
Her work extends into international collaboration and professional acknowledgment. In 2017, she was appointed as the ambassador for Panama to the Committee for Women in Mathematics, a body organized by the International Mathematical Union. Additionally, her efforts toward public engagement were recognized by the Rotary Club of Panama, which named her Rotarian of the Year for the 2018-2019 period.
