The 2021 Pritzker Architecture Prize recognized the body of work produced by Jean-Philippe Vassal, an architect who maintains that existing structures possess inherent value for potential reinvention. Since the late 1980s, his practice has challenged conventional construction methods through a focus on reduced-cost development and the adaptive reuse of buildings across various international housing projects.
Early Career and Niger
Born in 1954 in Casablanca during the French Protectorate of Morocco, Vassal pursued his professional training at the École nationale supérieure d'architecture et de paysage de Bordeaux, graduating in 1980. Following his studies, he relocated to Niger. For five years, he worked in the country as both an architect and town planner, gaining practical experience in regional development before returning to France.
