Segel made his feature debut in 1998 with Can't Hardly Wait. He gained critical attention for writing and starring in the 2008 film Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which was produced by Judd Apatow and Shauna Robertson. He later collaborated with Nicholas Stoller to write The Muppets, a project released in 2011. His other film credits include Knocked Up, I Love You, Man, The Five-Year Engagement, and Sex Tape. He also provided voice work for the 2010 animated feature Despicable Me, playing the character Vector. In 2015, he earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for his portrayal of David Foster Wallace in The End of the Tour.

Beyond screen acting, Segel ventured into young adult literature. In 2014, he released Nightmares!, a series co-authored with Kirsten Miller.
