Janine Jansen

Janine Jansen established herself as a prominent Dutch violinist through a career defined by both expansive orchestral performances and intimate chamber music projects. Born in 1978 in Soest, she developed her technical foundation at the Utrecht School of the Arts and the Utrechts Conservatorium, eventually gaining international recognition for her versatile repertoire and distinctive approach to classical string performance.

Early Development and Training

Raised in a musical family, Jansen began her formal violin studies at the age of six. Her instructors included Coosje Wijzenbeek, Philippe Hirschhorn, and Boris Belkin. Her early promise was evident during the 1991 Menuhin Competition, where she reached the finals as a junior competitor, followed by another appearance in the 1993 event. These experiences served as a springboard for her professional transition into the international concert circuit.

Orchestral and Solo Career

Jansen gained significant visibility through high-profile engagements, including opening the BBC Proms in 2005. Her ability to command large venues was showcased at the 2006 Berlin Philharmonic concert at the Waldbühne and a 2008 performance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. She has collaborated with major conductors such as Riccardo Chailly, Paavo Järvi, and Vladimir Jurowski, frequently appearing with groups like the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Chamber Music and Artistic Innovation

Beyond traditional concertos, Jansen has focused on chamber music, notably as a member of Spectrum Concerts Berlin since 1998 and by founding her own festival in Utrecht. She often deviates from standard recording conventions, such as using a five-string ensemble for Vivaldi projects. Her discography spans works from Bach and Beethoven to Prokofiev and contemporary pieces composed specifically for her, often featuring close family members in collaborative roles.

Recognition and Instrumentation

Her professional contributions have earned several honors, including the 2003 Dutch Music Prize, the Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist Award in 2009, the 2018 Johannes Vermeer Award, and the 2020 Herbert von Karajan Prize. Her performances have been supported by the use of various rare instruments, including several Stradivari violins such as the 1715 'Rode, Duke of Cambridge' and the 1707 'Rivaz, Baron Gutmann'.
