Janick Gers

Janick Gers joined Iron Maiden in 1990 to replace Adrian Smith, beginning a tenure that spanned ten studio albums and culminated in a 2026 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A guitarist and composer, he previously navigated the shifting landscape of British heavy metal through groups including White Spirit and Gillan.

Early Life and Education

Born in Hartlepool on January 27, 1957, Janick Robert Gers is the eldest of four children. His father, Bolesław, was a Polish Navy seaman who arrived in England during World War II and later served in the Royal Navy. Gers attended the English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College during the 1970s. Following his time with the band Gillan, he pursued a humanities degree with the intention of becoming a teacher.

Musical Career Development

Gers began his professional career as a lead guitarist for White Spirit, performing on their 1980 debut album. He transitioned to Gillan in 1981, appearing on Top of the Pops and recording two albums before the group dissolved in 1982. After a brief period with the project Gogmagog, he collaborated on Fish’s 1990 album, Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors. His association with Iron Maiden began when vocalist Bruce Dickinson recruited him to record the soundtrack song "Bring Your Daughter... to the Slaughter" and the subsequent solo album, Tattooed Millionaire.

Performance and Equipment

Known for a raw tone, Gers emphasizes heavy distortion and alternate picking. His stage persona is marked by high-energy movement, including tricks where he throws and catches his guitar. He typically uses Fender Stratocasters, particularly black or white models with rosewood fingerboards and Seymour Duncan pick-ups. He also incorporates a Gibson Chet Atkins semi-acoustic model for specific tracks. He is currently endorsed by Sandberg Guitars.

Personal Interests

Gers resides in Yarm, Teesside, with his wife, Sandra, and their two children. His son, Dylan, is also a musician who releases ambient post-rock. A dedicated follower of Hartlepool United, Gers maintains a season ticket in the Neale Cooper Stand at Victoria Park. He maintains connections to his Polish heritage, having reconnected with relatives in the Bydgoszcz area in 2011 after a 34-year hiatus.
