Seventy-nine hundred employees and one hundred thirty-two retail shops formed the international footprint of the Bata Corporation when Jan Antonín Baťa assumed leadership in 1932. Following the death of his half-brother Tomáš, he inherited a sprawling industrial network that served as the foundation for a period of rapid, global expansion during the Great Depression.
Industrial Diversification
Upon taking control of Baťa a.s. in Zlín, Baťa initiated an aggressive diversification strategy that extended far beyond footwear. His growth plans integrated the production of tires, textiles, and chemicals alongside heavy infrastructure projects including mines, canals, and a private railway. He further expanded the corporate portfolio into the manufacture of airplanes, bicycles, and specialized shoe production machinery, while establishing film studios to support internal development.

The scale of the company under his direction was substantial. In the early 1930s, the firm managed 16,560 employees and 1,645 shops across 25 distinct enterprises. The Czech lands held the majority of this labor force, accounting for 15,770 workers, while the Slovak territories supported an additional 250 employees. By the time of his death in 1965, he had grown the total shoe business footprint to more than six times its original size.
Exile and Brazilian Development
Following unsuccessful negotiations with German authorities regarding company control in 1939, Baťa relocated his family to the United States. He was blacklisted in 1941, leading to his eventual move to Brazil. There, he applied his industrial experience to urban planning, founding multiple industrial towns that remain standing today, including Batatuba, Batayporã, Bataguassu, Anaurilândia, and Mariápolis.
Professional and Public Life
Beyond his role as an entrepreneur, Baťa engaged in writing and poetry, and contributed as an opinion journalist. He participated in the First Prague International Management Congress in July 1924, an event organized by the Masaryk Academy of Labour. In recognition of his enduring influence, he was awarded the Grand cross of the Order of the White Lion in 2019 and held honorary citizenship in the city of Zlín.
