The ninth of fourteen children, Jakob Emanuel Handmann established his career through a rigorous apprenticeship in stucco plastering before transitioning to professional portraiture. Born in Basel in 1718, he spent his formative years traveling across Europe, absorbing technical influence from French and Italian masters before returning to Switzerland to anchor his practice among the patrician classes.
Early Training and International Study
Handmann began his formal training between 1735 and 1739 in Schaffhausen under the guidance of Johann Ulrich Schnetzler, where he learned both painting and stucco plastering. His artistic development was furthered by extensive travels that took him to Paris, Rome, and Naples. In Paris, he spent three years from 1739 to 1742 at the studio of Jean Restout the Younger. By 1742, he moved into a portrait studio partnership with an artist named Hörling, focusing his efforts on capturing the faces of sitters.

By the spring of 1743, Handmann arrived in Rome, where he refined his craft in the studios of Marco Benefial and Pierre Subleyras. During this period, he focused on replicating masterpieces from the Renaissance and Classical Antiquity. He returned to Switzerland by June 1746 and established his own studio in Basel in 1747. While based in Basel, his clientele predominantly comprised patricians from the city and the Bern region.
Late Career and Recognition
Handmann remained largely rooted in Switzerland for the remainder of his life, with the exception of a 1753 trip to Germany. In 1773, he attained membership in the Accademia Clementina of Bologna, an achievement facilitated by his connection to the Estonian nobleman Colonel Carl Friedrich von Staal. He maintained his career as a portraitist until his death in 1781 in Bern.
