Early Life and Education
Born on 8 April 1929 in Schaerbeek, Jacques Romain Georges Brel grew up in an austere household of Flemish descent. He attended the École Saint-Viateur before enrolling at the Institut Saint-Louis in 1941. While he struggled with arithmetic, he displayed an aptitude for writing and drama. By 1947, he began working at his father's cardboard factory, Vanneste and Brel, while actively participating in the Catholic youth organisation La Franche Cordée.

After recording his first 78 rpm record in 1953, Brel relocated to Paris at the invitation of Jacques Canetti. He performed at venues such as L'Écluse and Les Trois Baudets while struggling to establish his career. Following a difficult debut at the Grand Prix de la Chanson in 1954, his trajectory shifted when Juliette Gréco recorded his song Le diable (Ça va). By the end of 1954, Philips released his debut 10-inch LP, Jacques Brel et ses chansons.
Artistic Legacy and Film
Brel gained a devoted following for works such as Amsterdam, Ne me quitte pas, Ces Gens-Là, Les Bourgeois, Marieke, Bruxelles, L'Ivrogne, and La Fanette. His influence extended to English-speaking performers like David Bowie and Scott Walker. Beyond music, he appeared in ten films and directed two, including Le Far West, which received a Palme d'Or nomination at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival.
