His subsequent albums included For Everyman, released in 1973, and the highly successful Late for the Sky in 1974. The latter reached number 14 on the Billboard 200 chart. By 1976, The Pretender solidified his commercial standing, reaching number 5 on the album charts.

The 1977 release of Running on Empty represented a departure from standard recording practices by utilizing live concert performances, backstage recordings, and material captured on tour buses. The album rose to number 3 on the charts, remaining there for more than a year. It featured tracks such as the title song and The Load-Out/Stay. Throughout the 1980s, Browne continued to release successful albums, including Hold Out, his only record to reach number 1, and Lawyers in Love.
