Born in 1982 in South Windsor, Connecticut, Hathaway has transitioned from high-stakes military flight operations to the rigorous demands of orbital mission profiles as a member of the United States astronaut corps.
Military and Academic Foundation
After graduating from South Windsor High School in 2000, Hathaway enrolled at the United States Naval Academy. He completed his undergraduate studies in 2004 with a double major in physics and history. Upon receiving his commission that same year, he began his transition to the F/A-18E at Naval Air Station, Lemoore, California. His academic pursuits later expanded at Cranfield University, where he earned a Master of Science in aerospace dynamics in 2014, followed by a master’s degree in national security and strategic studies from the Naval War College.

Hathaway served as a naval aviator with multiple strike fighter squadrons. He deployed with Strike Fighter Squadron 14 aboard the USS Nimitz and Strike Fighter Squadron 136 aboard the USS Harry S. Truman. Beyond his squadron roles, he graduated from the Empire Test Pilots' School at Boscombe Down and fulfilled a tour at the Pentagon supporting the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His operational history includes 39 combat missions and more than 500 carrier landings.
Selection and Spaceflight Training
In December 2021, NASA identified Hathaway as one of ten candidates for Astronaut Group 23. He commenced his duties in January 2022 and concluded his basic training curriculum in March 2024. This preparation led to his assignment as pilot for the SpaceX Crew-12 mission. The flight launched on February 13, 2026, marking his entry into the Expedition 74/75 rotations.
