Formative Years and Early Career
The son of television producer Gerald W. Abrams and Carol Ann Abrams, J. J. Abrams relocated with his family to Los Angeles in 1971. He attended Palisades Charter High School before enrolling at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. During his final year of college, he collaborated with Jill Mazursky on a feature film treatment that Touchstone Pictures eventually purchased. This resulted in his first produced work, Taking Care of Business, followed by screenwriting credits on Regarding Henry, Forever Young, and Gone Fishin'.

Abrams achieved significant television success as a showrunner and producer. He co-created Felicity, which aired on The WB Network between 1998 and 2002. In 2001, he founded the production company Bad Robot. Under this banner, he developed the series Alias and co-created Lost alongside Damon Lindelof and Jeffrey Lieber. For Felicity, Alias, and Lost, he also composed the respective opening theme music. Later television projects include the science fiction series Fringe, which he co-created and executive produced, and the 2025 series Duster.
Major Film Contributions
His cinematic output includes screenwriting duties on the 1998 film Armageddon. As a director, he helmed Mission: Impossible III in 2006, followed by the 2009 reboot of Star Trek and its 2013 sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness. In 2011, he directed the thriller Super 8. He played a central role in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, directing and co-writing The Force Awakens in 2015 and The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, while serving as an executive producer for The Last Jedi in 2017.
