István Szőnyi

Hungarian painter (1894–1960)

The Hungarian University of Fine Arts served as both the site of István Szőnyi’s formative education between 1913 and 1920 and the institution where he would later spend over two decades as a professor. His contributions to the country's artistic landscape spanned decades of graphic development, political engagement, and a tenure as a national lawmaker.

Artistic Development and Early Training

Born in 1894 in Újpest, Szőnyi began his formal instruction at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in 1911. He eventually moved to the Artists’ Colony of Baia Mare, where he studied under Károly Ferenczy in 1914. His education faced interruptions due to military service, yet he maintained his focus, returning to the Academy in 1918 to study under István Réti. By 1921, he held his first solo exhibition at the Ernst Museum. Travels through Vienna and Berlin offered him exposure to classical masters, though his academic career suffered a temporary setback when he was expelled from the Academy in 1920 due to his political activities.

Graphic Arts and Professional Career

As a prominent figure within the etching generation, Szőnyi became a vital force in Hungarian graphic art during the early 1920s. He relocated to Zebegény in 1924 and joined the KUT collective. In 1928, he became one of the first recipients of a state-established grant for study in Rome. Returning to academia, he was appointed a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1937, where he led the mural department for over twenty years, despite receiving few monumental commissions for wall-based works. During the 1930s, he remained a key member of the Gresham circle and authored a technical treatise on drawing and painting methods.

Public Service and Recognition

Beyond his creative output, Szőnyi participated in national governance as a member of the National Assembly of Hungary from 1945 to 1947. His work earned significant state recognition, most notably the Kossuth Prize in 1949. Years after his death in Zebegény in 1960, Yad Vashem designated him and his family as Righteous Among the Nations on October 2, 1984, in recognition of their efforts to rescue Jewish individuals. The Szőnyi István Memorial Museum, which opened in 1967 at his former home and studio in Zebegény, maintains a collection of his works and preserves the environment in which he produced them.
