Isaias Afwerki assumed the presidency of Eritrea in 1993, following a decades-long military struggle against Ethiopian control. Born in Asmara in 1946, he rose to prominence within the independence movement, eventually consolidating authority over the Eritrean People's Liberation Front to lead the country through its transition to a sovereign state and beyond.
Early Involvement in Independence Movements
Born in the Aba Shi'Aul district of Asmara, Afwerki attended Prince Makonnen High School before entering Haile Selassie I University, now Addis Ababa University, in 1965. By 1966, he travelled to Sudan to join the Eritrean Liberation Front. After receiving military and political training in China in 1967, he returned to Eritrea, where he grew critical of the ELF's internal structure. He became a leader of the breakaway faction that eventually formed the Eritrean People's Liberation Front in 1973.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Afwerki maneuvered to secure absolute control over the EPLF. He navigated internal conflicts, including the execution of several party leaders in 1974. By the 1987 second congress of the EPLF, he secured his position as secretary-general. Under his command, the organization developed into a centralized force, eventually securing victory over Ethiopian Derg troops on 24 May 1991, effectively ending a 30-year independence war.
Presidency and Governance
Upon the formal independence of Eritrea, Afwerki took office as the nation's first president. Since 1994, he has also served as the chairman of the People's Front for Democracy and Justice. His tenure has been defined by the absence of enforced constitutional law and the implementation of mass conscription policies. International organizations have consistently criticized his administration for systemic human rights violations and the suppression of democratic institutions.
