Relocation and Market Entry
Born in 1874 in Thessaloniki, Isaac Carasso belonged to the Sephardic Jewish Carasso family. Following the conclusion of the Balkan Wars, he relocated his family to Barcelona in 1916. During this period, he observed that young children frequently experienced digestive and intestinal ailments. Drawing upon his knowledge of practices from the Balkans, where fermented milk was used as a health remedy, he sought to introduce a similar product to the Spanish market.

Carasso utilized findings from the Institut Pasteur, specifically incorporating cultures isolated at the laboratory of Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov. To ensure product consistency and scale, he developed the first industrial process for manufacturing yogurt. Because the product lacked recognition among the general public, he initially marketed the fermented milk as a pharmaceutical treatment, distributing it through pharmacies rather than general food retail outlets.
Founding Danone
In 1919, he formalized his commercial activities by opening a dedicated business in Barcelona. He named the company Danone, derived from the nickname of his son, Daniel Carasso. This small-scale operation functioned as the foundation for what would eventually expand into Groupe Danone. Following Isaac Carasso's death in 1939 in Paris, his son Daniel assumed control of the operations, eventually expanding the brand into France and the United States, where it operated under the name Dannon.
