Early Career and Public Service
Born in Lisbon in 1437, Abrabanel was educated in rabbinic literature and Jewish philosophy under the guidance of Joseph Chaim. By the age of 20, he had already authored texts regarding religious prophecy and natural elements. His proficiency in financial management caught the attention of King Afonso V of Portugal, who appointed him as a royal treasurer. During this time, he used his personal wealth to organize ransom collections for Jewish captives taken during the conquest of Arzila.

Following the death of King Afonso V, political accusations regarding the Duke of Braganza forced Abrabanel to flee to Castile in 1483, resulting in the confiscation of his fortune. In Toledo, he resumed his scholarly work before re-entering public service. He worked as a financier for the royal army of Queen Isabella I of Castile. In 1503, he settled in Venice, where he facilitated negotiations for a commercial treaty between Portugal and the Venetian republic.
Literary and Philosophical Output
Abrabanel produced a significant body of written work, including the Peirush Abrabanel. His approach to exegesis was distinct for the era, as he incorporated social and political context into his analysis of the Torah and Nevi'im. His writings generally fell into categories of exegesis, philosophy, and apologetics.
