Igor de Vetyemy launched his career in 2004 by winning a competition to design a social daycare center for the labor community at the Ilha do Fundão in Rio de Janeiro. Since that early success, the Brazilian architect has developed a practice focused on sustainable design, bio-climate research, and the pursuit of surprising human sensory experiences within built environments.
Formative Years and Education
Born in Rio de Janeiro on February 28, 1981, de Vetyemy underwent extensive training across three countries. He graduated with distinction from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 2005. During the early 2000s, he studied under Oscar Niemeyer, later specializing in architectural history at the University of Oxford between 2003 and 2004. He concluded his formal academic training in 2012 by defending a Master thesis on mutualistic architecture at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, where he again graduated with distinction.

During his formative years in Rio de Janeiro, de Vetyemy gained experience at the firm Indio da Costa AUDT and co-founded the Garage Group, a collective focused on architectural research and collaborative development. His 2006 project, the City of Sex in Copacabana, drew international attention, leading to presentations for the city mayor and publication in media outlets across thirty countries. British architect Nigel Coates described this work as a significant development in updating Rio’s architectural tradition.
Academic and Design Contributions
De Vetyemy began his teaching career in 2006 at Estácio de Sá University, followed by a faculty position at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 2008. His lectures have covered topics such as sustainable architecture, ephemeral structures, and urban voids. In 2007, he established his own professional office, Igor de Vetyemy arquitetura e design. His work gained visibility in Europe in 2008 when he participated in the London Festival of Architecture at Gallery 32.
International Work and Recognition
After relocating to the Netherlands in 2010, de Vetyemy began a collaboration with the Delft-based firm Mecanoo architecten in 2011. His design work continued to receive recognition, most notably in 2012 when the Netherlands Architecture Institute awarded him first prize in the Building of the Future competition for his proposal regarding underground canal houses in downtown Amsterdam. He remains active in the field, with his work spanning residential, commercial, and institutional projects.
