The 1965 film The Shop on Main Street secured Ida Kamińska a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress, establishing her as the first Polish performer to achieve such recognition. Beyond this international milestone, she maintained a prolific career as a director and actor, producing over 70 plays and performing in more than 150 theatre productions across several decades.
Early Career and Family Roots
Born in 1899 in Odesa, Kamińska emerged from a prominent theatrical lineage. Her parents were the stage actress Ester Rachel Kamińska and the director Abraham Izaak Kamiński. She began acting at age six, appearing in Jakob Gordin's play Mirele Efros. By 18, she was already directing within her father's troupe. In 1922, she co-founded the Warsaw Jewish Art Theater with her first husband, Zygmunt Turkow, and later managed her own company, the Drama Theater of Ida Kamińska, from 1932 until the outbreak of World War II.

Following the German invasion of Poland in 1939, Kamińska and her second husband, Marian Melman, fled to Lwów. During the war years, the family moved across various Soviet territories, including the Kirghiz SSR, where she continued her theatrical work. Returning to Warsaw in 1946, she faced the challenge of rebuilding Jewish cultural life in a devastated country. In 1949, with government subsidies, she established the Jewish State Theater of Poland, acting as its artistic director until 1968.
International Recognition and Exile
Kamińska's portrayal of Mrs. Lautmann in the Czechoslovak film The Shop on Main Street brought her significant acclaim, including a special mention at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1967, she moved to the United States and directed herself in Mother Courage and Her Children on Broadway. She permanently departed Poland in 1968, protesting the state's antisemitic campaign. Her final screen appearance occurred in the 1970 film The Angel Levine.
