Hugo Miguel Ferreira Gomes Viana began his professional football career at Sporting CP, where he earned the Young European Footballer of the Year award. European Club Tenure
In June 2002, Newcastle United secured Viana for 12 million euros. Under manager Bobby Robson, Viana struggled to displace established midfielders such as Kieron Dyer and Gary Speed, eventually returning to Sporting CP on loan. He later moved to Valencia, where he faced competition from David Albelda and Rubén Baraja. A loan spell at Osasuna was hampered by a pre-season injury, leading to limited appearances during his time in Spain. By 2009, he returned to Portugal to join Braga, contributing to their best-ever league finish and participating in the UEFA Europa League.

Viana made his senior Portugal debut in November 2001. Although he was selected for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, he did not appear on the pitch. He represented the under-23 side at the 2004 Summer Olympics, exiting after a loss to Costa Rica. He scored his only senior international goal against Latvia in 2005. Later, he served as a replacement for the Euro 2012 squad, having previously endured a five-year absence from the national team setup.
Middle Eastern Career and Retirement
In 2013, Viana joined Al Ahli in Dubai, where he helped the club secure a domestic treble, including the UAE Pro League title. His career in the Middle East included a move to Al Wasl, following a registration delay that voided an initial transfer attempt. Viana retired from professional play on 13 October 2016 at the age of 33.
Post-Playing Career
Following his retirement, Viana transitioned into football administration. He held the position of director of football at Belenenses starting in May 2017 before moving to Sporting CP in 2018. Currently, he serves as the director of football for Manchester City, managing operations for the Premier League side.
