The only goal in the 1975 Copa América final originated from the boot of Hugo Sotil, who arrived in Caracas just in time to secure the continental title for Peru. Known to supporters as El Cholo, he emerged as a prominent figure in South American football throughout the 1970s through his technical skill as both a striker and a midfielder.
Early Career and Deportivo Municipal
Sotil began his professional journey in 1967, quickly establishing himself at Deportivo Municipal. By 1968, he played a central role in helping the club earn promotion from the Peruvian Segunda División to the top tier. His performances drew significant local attention, and he remained a popular figure within the Peruvian league before his move to Europe.

In 1973, Sotil signed with FC Barcelona, becoming the first Latin American player to wear the club's number 10 jersey. He formed an effective partnership with Johan Cruyff, helping Barcelona secure the Spanish Primera División title in his debut season, which ended a 14-year trophy drought. During his tenure, he played 113 games and scored 36 goals, including the fifth goal in a 5–0 victory against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.
International Milestones
Sotil represented the Peru national team 62 times between 1970 and 1978, scoring 18 goals. He participated in two FIFA World Cups, reaching the quarterfinals in 1970 and the second round in 1978. In 1973, he featured in an exhibition match between an American select team and a European squad, where he scored the third goal for his side in a 4–4 draw.
Later Years and Legacy
After returning to Peru in 1977, he helped Alianza Lima win consecutive national titles. He subsequently played for Independiente Medellín and later returned to Deportivo Municipal, retiring from professional football after a stint with Los Espartanos in 1984. Beyond sports, he starred in the 1972 biographical film Cholo. He died in Lima on 30 December 2024 at age 75.
