Academic Foundation and Early Career
Born in Tabriz in 1967, Shahabi pursued formal training at the University of Tehran. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in classical music before completing a master's degree in cinema directing. Following his graduation, he spent several years as a music educator. This dual background in sound and visual narrative informed his later approach to filmmaking, where he took on roles as a screenwriter, cinematographer, and film score composer.

His feature film debut, The Bright Day (2013), established his international reputation. The narrative centers on a woman navigating the complexities of the Iranian justice system to prevent a death penalty execution. Critics frequently compared his focus on the mobility of the protagonist and social realism to the work of Abbas Kiarostami. The film garnered nominations in four categories at the 31st Fajr International Film Festival and secured a special jury mention at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival.
Festival Recognition and Global Reach
Throughout his career, Shahabi’s works, including The Sale and Conditional Release, were screened at numerous international venues, such as the Zurich Film Festival, the Stockholm Film Festival, and the Cambridge Film Festival. He received the Silver Pheasant Award for best debut director at the 19th International Film Festival of Kerala. His body of work spanned ten fictional features intended for the Iranian video market and five theatrical features.
