Homi Jehangir Bhabha was an Indian nuclear physicist whose career bridged the transition from the British Raj to the independent Dominion of India. Born in Mumbai in 1909, he built a reputation in theoretical physics through his work at the University of Cambridge before returning to his home country to establish foundational scientific research institutions.
Academic Formation
Bhabha received his early schooling at the Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai before attending Elphinstone College and the University of Mumbai. He continued his studies at the University of Cambridge, where he earned first-class honors in both his Mechanical Tripos in 1930 and his Mathematics Tripos two years later. His transition toward theoretical physics was cemented by his research at the Cavendish Laboratory.

In 1940, Bhabha joined the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, where he served as a professor by 1942. He became the founding director of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in 1945. His administrative contributions were recognized through his membership in numerous professional bodies, including the Royal Society, the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Scientific Recognition
His research in nuclear physics garnered international acclaim throughout his career. In 1942, he was awarded the Adams Prize. Later in his life, his contributions to science and engineering were acknowledged with the Padma Bhushan. He also received the Melchett Medal for his work, solidifying his stature among the global physics community during the mid-twentieth century.
