A graduate of Tama Art University, his career spans roles as a screenwriter, key animator, and film director, eventually leading to his status as a co-founder of the animation house Studio Trigger.
Early Production Roles
Imaishi began his professional path in 1995, contributing to Neon Genesis Evangelion as an in-between animator. His early experience included various technical responsibilities, such as key animation, storyboarding, and animation direction for projects including Kare Kano, FLCL, and Medabots. These foundational years allowed him to refine the rapid, energetic movement that would later define his signature style. The transition to directorial roles began with the 2004 film Dead Leaves and the opening episode of Re: Cutie Honey. His most significant breakthrough occurred in 2007 with Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, a television series that earned him multiple accolades, including an Excellence Prize at the Japan Media Arts Festival and a personal award at the Animation Kobe Festival. The work on Gurren Lagann, alongside subsequent titles like Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, drew creative inspiration from animator Yoshinori Kanada.
Studio Trigger and Global Projects
In 2011, Imaishi left Gainax to establish Studio Trigger. His inaugural directorial effort at the new studio was Kill la Kill, released in 2013. His output continued to diversify with projects such as Space Patrol Luluco, the 2019 film Promare, and the 2022 series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. He also contributed to international collaborations, including the opening sequence for Black Dynamite and the Star Wars: Visions short film The Twins.
