Hirokazu Koreeda

Hirokazu Koreeda directed his first television documentary, Lessons from a Calf, in 1991, marking the start of a career in screenwriting, film editing, and production. Born in Tokyo in 1962, the Japanese filmmaker transitioned from documentaries to fiction features with Maborosi, which secured the Golden Osella at the 52nd Venice International Film Festival in 1995.

Early Development and Education

Koreeda grew up in Nerima as the youngest of three children. His mother encouraged an early interest in cinema by watching films starring Joan Fontaine and Ingrid Bergman on television. During his youth, he played volleyball and eventually served as team captain in high school. He later enrolled at Waseda University, graduating from the Graduate School of Letters, Arts and Sciences in 1987.

Documentary Roots

Before directing fiction, he worked as an assistant director for television documentaries. A notable early project was August without Him, filmed between 1992 and 1994, which chronicled the activism of Hirata Yutaka, a man living with HIV/AIDS. The film captured the progression of Yutaka's condition until his death on 29 May 1994.

Progression in Feature Filmmaking

Following his move into fiction, Koreeda garnered consistent festival recognition. He won best film and screenplay honors for After Life at the 1999 Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema. In 2005, he received the Blue Ribbon Awards for Best Director and Best Film for Nobody Knows, while his 2008 film Still Walking was noted for its personal connection to his own family experiences.

International Recognition

Koreeda attained significant acclaim for Like Father, Like Son, which won the Jury Prize at the 66th Cannes Film Festival in 2013. His 2018 drama Shoplifters won the Palme d'Or at the 71st Cannes Film Festival and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. He was also awarded the Donostia Award for his lifetime achievement at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in 2018.
