Hidilyn Diaz became the first athlete from the Philippines to secure an Olympic gold medal during the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Her performance in the women's 55-kilogram weightlifting category established new Olympic records, as she successfully cleared 127 kilograms in the clean and jerk for a combined total of 224 kilograms.
Early Development in Zamboanga
Born in 1991 in Zamboanga, Diaz is the fifth of six children. Her father worked as a tricycle driver, farmer, and fisherman. Introduced to weightlifting by her cousin Allen Jayfrus Diaz, she initially trained with makeshift equipment including concrete and mag wheels. During her youth, she also sold fish and vegetables to cover transport costs to the local gymnasium. She joined the national weightlifting team at age 13.

Diaz qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics as a wild card entry, becoming the first female weightlifter to represent the Philippines at the Games. At 17, she competed in the 58-kilogram division, placing near the end of the field but gaining international experience. She returned for the 2012 London Olympics, serving as the nation's flagbearer, though she did not finish the event due to three unsuccessful attempts in the clean and jerk.
Transition to Elite Success
To improve her competitiveness, Diaz moved from the 58-kilogram category to the 53-kilogram division. This shift led to consistent success, including a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, which broke a 20-year drought for the country. By 2020, competing in the 55-kilogram class, she reached the pinnacle of her career by winning gold. Her achievements have been recognized through awards such as the Gen.T Philippines honors.
Academic Pursuits
Education remained a priority throughout her athletic career. After attending Zamboanga A.E. Colleges, later known as Universidad de Zamboanga, she enrolled at the De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde. Despite taking leaves of absence to focus on Olympic training, she graduated with a degree in business management in July 2023. She later pursued further studies in sports ethics at KU Leuven and completed a culinary course in 2025.
