The career of Hideaki Anno spans multiple disciplines, including animation, screenwriting, and live-action directing, anchored by the international reach of his Evangelion franchise. Born in 1960 in Ube, Japan, he emerged from the student animation scene to become a central figure in the industry, maintaining a reputation for a distinctive, introspective style that challenges traditional narrative structures.
Early Career and Gainax
Anno began his professional trajectory while attending the Osaka University of Arts between 1980 and 1983. He quickly gained notice for his contributions to the 1982 series The Super Dimension Fortress Macross and his animation work on Hayao Miyazaki’s 1984 film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. In December 1984, he co-founded the studio Gainax, where he served as an animation director for the 1987 feature The Wings of Honnêamise. He continued to lead key studio projects throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, most notably the production of Gunbuster in 1988.

His primary creative output, Neon Genesis Evangelion, aired between 1995 and 1996. Due to production constraints at Gainax, the series famously concluded with two abstract episodes focused on the internal psychological states of its characters. This led to further cinematic explorations, including 1997's The End of Evangelion. Anno later returned to the franchise to write and direct the Rebuild of Evangelion series, spanning from 2007 to 2021, which aimed to provide a more accessible entry point for new audiences compared to the original television run.
Live Action and Continued Directing
Beyond animation, Anno directed various live-action projects, including the 2004 films Cutie Honey and Re: Cutie Honey. In 2016, he directed Shin Godzilla, a production that launched a series of tokusatsu reboots. His directorial work has garnered significant professional recognition, including the Japan Academy Prize for Director of the Year in 2017. He remains active in the field through his studio, Khara, which he established in 2006.
