Born in Funchal in 1930, Hélder moved to the mainland in 1946 to finish his secondary schooling. He did not complete this degree, opting instead to abandon his formal studies after three years.

Upon returning to Lisbon, Hélder integrated into a circle of artists and writers that included Mário Cesariny, Luiz Pacheco, João Vieira, and Hélder Macedo. This environment, heavily influenced by Surrealism, anchored his early creative development. During the subsequent years, he lived in France, the Netherlands, and Belgium, sustaining himself through menial employment while continuing to refine his poetry.
Literary Output and Style
Hélder worked as a librarian, journalist, and translator, producing a vast body of poetry and prose characterized by visual complexity and experimental structures. His major publications range from the 1961 collection A Colher na Boca to later works like Servidões, published in 2013. His final collection, Poemas canhotos, was completed shortly before his death in 2015 and released posthumously.

Hélder was known for his aversion to literary prizes and media exposure, maintaining a reputation for profound privacy. When awarded the Pessoa Prize in 1995, he explicitly rejected the honor, requesting that the committee refrain from publicizing the event and redirect the award to another individual. He lived the remainder of his life in Cascais until his death at age 85.
