Herbert William Richmond

mathematician; (1863-1948)

The Cremona–Richmond configuration remains a fundamental concept within the field of geometry, documenting a unique geometric arrangement attributed to the research of Herbert William Richmond. An English mathematician active between the late nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries, his work contributed to the rigorous structural developments that defined the era of mathematical foundation building in the United Kingdom.

Academic Foundation and Career

Born in Tottenham in 1863, Herbert William Richmond followed a structured academic path within the British university system. He attended Merchant Taylors' School from 1875 until 1882, subsequently moving to King's College for his undergraduate studies between 1882 and 1885. His career remained tied to King's College, where he maintained an association from 1888 until his death in 1948. Beyond his primary academic commitments, he served as chairperson from 1920 to 1922 and held a position at HMS Excellent between 1916 and 1919.

Contributions to Geometry

Richmond is recognized for his specific developments in algebraic geometry and geometric construction. His analytical work includes the Richmond surface and the namesake Cremona–Richmond configuration, both of which serve as notable references in the literature of his field. In 1893, he published an exact construction of the regular heptadecagon, a problem previously addressed by Carl Friedrich Gauss.

Professional Recognition and Legacy

His contributions to mathematics were formally acknowledged by several professional bodies. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1911 and maintained active involvement with the London Mathematical Society. Richmond died in Cambridge in 1948 at the age of 85. He was buried at King's College Chapel, concluding a life dedicated to the advancement of mathematical logic and foundations.
