He trained under the guidance of coach Percy Cerutty, who utilized unconventional methods at the Portsea training camp. This regimen involved rigorous physical exertion, such as sprinting up sand dunes, to build endurance. These methods, contrasted with traditional track workouts, were fundamental to his preparation for major international competitions, including the 1958 Commonwealth Games in Cardiff where he won both the 880 yards and the mile.

Following his retirement from athletics, Elliott pursued academic and professional interests. He studied natural sciences at the University of Cambridge under a Shell Australia scholarship, matriculating at Jesus College. He served as deputy chairman and later non-executive chairman of Fortescue Metals Group, as well as chairman of the Global Corporate Challenge.
